Online Gaming: The New Social Scene?

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

As I’m sure everyone is aware of by now, with the advent of sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and FriendFeed, social networking is huge and has many implications for the Internet. Especially with Facebook, the effect that social networking has on our everyday lives is enormous and in a few cases, life altering.

For example, a common tip when job hunting is to ‘clean up’ your various online profiles and employers routinely check to ensure there is nothing untoward.

Another example is being able to instantly communicate with large groups of friends without the need for special software. It is also a well known fact that online gaming, whether it be Role Playing, or Massively Multiplayer, is an almost recession-proof business, projected to have earnings in excess of $2,000,000,000 by 2010.

What if there was a way to merge these two ever-expanding trends into something that enables regular people to keep in touch with friends and family and also allows them to relax together even if they are thousands of miles apart?

Uvme has done just that. It enables players regardless of location or hardware to communicate via community based forums and chat.

It also enables them to challenge each other to games of skill, kind of like playing in the basketball yard at school on break but without the fouls! It allows people the ability to easily make new friends and contacts while having a good time and should you choose, gives you the ability to earn an income online.

So to recap, you get the chance to build your own social network, a business and all while relaxing and playing games you enjoy.

My names Tony, and I’m a Twitterholic…

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I think that when it comes to Twitter, web users fall into 1 of 4 groups;

1. Love it
2. Hate it
3. Don’t get it
4. Never tried it

Until a few weeks ago, I fell into the last one, then moved up to 3, and I’m now firmly planted in group 1. I can’t put my finger on what it is that makes it so addictive, but I’ve now found myself waking up in the morning and switching on my iPod just to find out who’s been tweeting what while I’ve been asleep. I then follow updates throughout the day in work, and get home and check again on my iPod what’s happened in the hour since I left the office.

To any observers, they would surely say it’s ridiculous behaviour. But I’m completely hooked.

I’ve tried various social websites in the past, Bebo, Facebook, and MySpace. Of those I keep intending to keep Facebook updated and leave the other two. But I get bored with Facebook. But with Twitter, it somehow keeps my interest. Maybe it’s the constant changing updates, or the cut down, focused interface that only shows what you need to know – I can’t decide.

If you’re in group 3 or 4 above, then why not give it a try and see for your self what all the buzz is about. You can follow me to start GratisGadgets
